Victorian Tile Colours & Traditional Ceramic Glazes

The distinctive colours of Victorian and Edwardian ceramic tiles remain one of the defining features of period interiors. From deep emerald greens and rich cobalt blues to warm honey, chocolate and burgundy tones, these vibrant glazes continue to inspire homeowners, architects and interior designers restoring historic properties, creating traditionally styled homes and designing contemporary interiors.

At Victorian Ceramics, every ceramic wall tile is individually hand decorated and glazed using traditional techniques. This creates subtle variations in tone, depth and finish that give handmade ceramics their unmistakable character, ensuring that every tile has its own individual qualities.

Rich Colour with Exceptional Depth

Victorian ceramic glazes are admired for their remarkable richness and visual depth. Unlike modern flat finishes, traditional ceramic glazes interact beautifully with light, creating colours that appear luminous, layered and full of life.

This effect becomes particularly noticeable as lighting changes throughout the day. Natural daylight reveals the clarity and depth of each glaze, while interior lighting can enhance their warmth, making the surface appear deeper and more vibrant.

Our collection includes many of the colours traditionally associated with Victorian and Edwardian interiors, including emerald green, bottle green, olive green, cobalt blue, deep burgundy, honey, chocolate brown, teapot brown, cream, off-white and ivory. We also offer a full range of contemporary colours for projects where traditional craftsmanship is combined with a more modern palette.

Handmade Glazes with Individual Character

Every tile is hand glazed, allowing subtle variations in colour, tone and surface finish. Rather than producing a perfectly uniform surface, this traditional process creates movement within the glaze that reflects the craftsmanship and individuality of original nineteenth-century ceramics.

These gentle tonal variations enhance moulded and embossed decorative designs, bringing patterns to life with remarkable depth. The glossy finish also responds beautifully to surrounding colours and changing natural light, allowing Victorian ceramic tiles to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Traditional Colours for Period Homes

Victorian ceramic colours were designed to create warmth, elegance and permanence within the home. Their rich, glossy finishes remain just as striking today, making them equally suited to Victorian fireplaces, Edwardian fireplaces, kitchens, bathrooms, porches and feature walls.

Whether you choose deep emerald green, luminous cobalt blue, warm honey, rich burgundy or classic cream, traditional handmade glazes bring timeless character to every project. Their ability to interact with changing light, combined with subtle handcrafted variation, ensures that every installation has a distinctive character that can be appreciated for years to come.

The Beauty of Crazing

Crazing is a fine network of hairline cracks that develops within the glaze surface. Rather than being considered a defect, crazing is widely appreciated as one of the characteristics that can give antique and traditionally made ceramics their authenticity, warmth and individuality.

Crazing develops naturally over time as the ceramic body and glaze expands and contracts at slightly different rates. This gentle ageing process contributes to the character of the surface, gradually forming a delicate web of fine lines that is unique to each tile, much like the patina that develops on antique furniture or the mellowing of old wood and stone.

As crazing develops, it can add remarkable visual depth to the glaze. Light is reflected differently across the fine network of lines, creating subtle variations in colour and tone that bring the tile to life. The effect can be particularly striking in changing light when the glaze appears to shimmer and reveal new shades and textures.

Crazing is a characteristic of the glaze surface and does not compromise the ceramic body beneath it.

Choosing Your Victorian Tile Colour

Choosing the right colour is an important part of creating an authentic period interior. Deep greens and blues can create a rich and dramatic finish, while honey, cream, ivory and warm brown tones offer a softer and more traditional appearance.

Colours can also be combined to create bespoke blends, allowing individual projects to reflect the character of the property and the surrounding interior.

As the appearance of a glazed ceramic tile can vary depending on lighting, surrounding colours and the natural variation created during the handmade process, we recommend viewing physical samples wherever possible before making a final colour selection.

The glazes are formulated in-house to complement the designs from the William Morris, William De Morgan and Philip Webb collections.

Plain Coloured Tiles

Our glazes are based on original Victorian and Edwardian glaze recipes. Hand glazing ensures subtle variations in colour across each tile and from tile to tile providing the authentic look of period tiles. The life and individuality of our tiles makes every order entirely unique to each customer.  As in original tiles of the period crazing is a normal feature of these glazes.

Traditional Victorian Colours

The traditional Victorian and Edwardian glaze colours are based on a small and recognisable palette of colours as shown below.  A distinctive feature of these tiles is the sharp edge which allows the tiles to be set with a ‘tight’ grout joint or touching (butt jointed) as seen in original tiling.
